Runes Protocol

« Back to Glossary Index

The Runes Protocol is a new system for creating fungible tokens directly on the Bitcoin blockchain, introduced by Casey Rodarmor (creator of Ordinals). Unlike earlier attempts like BRC-20, which used text-based inscriptions that caused blockchain bloat, Runes was designed from the ground up to be clean, efficient, and UTXO-friendly — meaning it works more naturally with how Bitcoin is already structured.

Runes make it possible to mint and transfer Bitcoin-native tokens without relying on altcoins, sidechains, or Layer 2s. This enables new use cases — like loyalty points, meme coins, DeFi primitives, or community tokens — natively on Bitcoin while preserving the chain’s simplicity and decentralization.

$BITCOIN•VIP is one of the first tokens launched using the Runes Protocol. It’s part of a movement to celebrate and explore the capabilities of Bitcoin-based tokens — showcasing how communities and creators can issue unique digital assets without leaving the Bitcoin ecosystem. The token represents a VIP-level commitment to Bitcoin, combining meme energy with education and maximalist values.

Example Sentence: Tokens like $BITCOIN•VIP are being launched using the Runes Protocol to bring new energy and experimentation to Bitcoin — without sacrificing its core values.
